Islamabad: The new batch of young development fellows was welcomed with an orientation session with Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal today. The batch consists of young professionals from different areas of Pakistan, selected after a rigorous process of applications and interviews. Secretary planning Owais Manzoor Sumra, in his opening remarks, stated that the Planning ministry is the most important ministry that gives the broadest exposure to government practices, offering a conducive environment for learning about public functioning. Minister Ahsan Iqbal, while addressing the batch, said that in the previous batches a high standard had been set because the alumni, after completing their fellowships, went on to seek positions in World Bank, United Nations, ADB, and other organizations. While those oriented towards academic interests secured PhD admissions in top universities of the world.
He further said that the Young Development Fellows' program will help them develop their perspectives on the limitations of resources in government. "This realisation will also open a fresh opportunity for you to design innovative projects that require less resources but have a clear vision to meet public development needs," he said.
He directed the batch of newly inducted YDFs to always see an opportunity to learn and lead in every environment. Referring towards different initiatives developed by past Young Development Fellows, he said that Young Peace and Development Corps unit was set up by one talented YDF, and the unit inspired the creation of 60 active chapters in different universities across the country.
Stating that the fellows will get immense exposure to contribute in different sections and departments of the planning commission, he expressed hope in the demographic power held by youth in Pakistan.
"Planning Commission can also incorporate the opinions, insights and analysis contributed by youth to improve its projects under development, so that the larger needs of Pakistan's young population can be accommodated," stated the Minister.
